Title IX Complaint
If you believe a school or program is violating Title IX,
you have the right to file a complaint with the U.S.
Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR).
Is This a Title IX Violation?
Good news: Anyone can quickly and easily file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights.
- Determine whether you have a likely Title IX violation.
- Does the school or group receive federal funding?
- Does the program or club exclude a gender?
Examples include scholarships, educational programs, student clubs, organizations, mentorship programs, resource centers.
- Are there exceptions?
If the answer is YES to all four, go to Step 2.
Step 1: Collect Information
Screenshot any website, email, flyer, or brochure promoting the potentially violating program.
Save the webpage link where the information appears online.
Include the name and address of the school.
Step 2: Identify Your Local OCR
Identify your local Office for Civil Rights (OCR).
Step 3: Use OCR Template
To file your complaint with the (OCR), you can use the official OCR Discrimination Complaint Form or submit your own signed complaint letter.
Step 4: Draft and Attach
Draft an email to the OCR office responsible for the school.
Attach your completed complaint form, consent form, and any supporting documents.
Step 5: Send and Follow Up
Send your complaint to the applicable OCR email.
You may also email a copy to the school or university president and general counsel.
